Yahoo's New Image Search
Despite the fact that Google gets over three times more traffic, Yahoo continues to soldier on impressively. Their latest release that has everyone talking is the new image search. Google has had this feature for some time, as its loyalists know, but Yahoo's image search has brought a little something new to the table.
When you search Yahoo images for a place like, say Los Angeles, you will get the usual image results related to Los Angeles, just like you would in Google. What Yahoo does offer which google doesn't, is a side list of places of interest within the city you searched on. This list contains thumbnails of these places, such as the John Paul Getty Museum. Below its name is listed the number of images, which range from dozens to over a million depending on the listing. You can select the thumbnail or its title to view images specific to that place.
A nice feature of this place list is that you can look at images specific to a location, like the Getty Museum, without leaving your original search (Los Angeles in our example).
It seems that Yahoo strategically released this feature with the location specific advantages during the summer because that is the time when vacationers will be looking for destinations that interest them. Aside from the virtual tour of destinations that users can take on Yahoo, there is nothing else that really seems to stand out in their image search release. Yahoo's aim is to trump Google's image search. While their version seems more graceful than their competitor, it remains to be seen how many users they will manage to draw from Google.
