It's easy to sign up for a Twitter account or create a Facebook page, but they can easily turn into an unused barren wasteland. Here are a few tips to help you follow through to social media greatness.

If You Build it They Will Come?!?

Unfortunately that is hardly ever the case. The first step is to connect with all your colleagues, friends and past customers. A lot of the time they are happy to spread the word as well. Beyond that, be active in your social media and be sure to link to your social media whenever and wherever it makes sense (about pages, profiles, website, business cards, email signature...).

What is Your Objective?

OK, you have a ton of followers on Twitter and your Facebook fans number in the thousands. Now What? You certainly don't want to start telling them about your day or what your dog just threw up in the backyard.

Have a plan! Whether you're selling a product or a brand, outline some general ideas on what you feel your customers would like to see from you. Have a good brainstorming session at the office and don't be shy, go straight to the source to ask current customers what they would see as beneficial.

Who's in Charge?

Your blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc... Have someone that is in charge of the posts as well as answering questions. Without a main person in charge, things slip through the cracks - from inappropriate posts to unanswered customer questions, which could lose you more than the potential gains.

Are You Ready to be Social at a Moment's Notice?

Know who your rapid response team is and be prepared! Someone just posted a comment on your blog, posted a message on Facebook or replied to you on Twitter! Now what? That's right; answer them in a timely and professional manner. And by timely, I mean as soon as humanly possible because there is a good chance that the very same customer may have posted to your competition while on their search for answers.

There are many time saving tools out there to help and don't forget to set up you mobile units (cell, tablet, etc) to help you in your efforts!
