Getting the Most Out of Your SEO Company
Not all SEO companies are honest. Just like any other industry, there are good SEOs and bad SEOs. If you are in the market for an online marketing firm here are a few things to look for:
Bad SEO Companies:
- May offer ranking guarantees. “First in Google or it's free.” – There is no way any company can promise the top spot in any search engine, especially for search terms clients are using to look for your services or products. Being first for "Smith and Madison Kitchens in Maine" in Google gets you exactly zero visitors each month. Better to be sixth for "Appliance repair in New England."
- Offer plans with a single upfront payment. – SEO work is dynamic, if your SEO isn't going to establish a long term plan and work with you over time to grow your online presence, it's unlikely that you'll see much benefit from your marketing dollars. Most likely, these "companies" will take your money and then stop taking your calls.
Good SEO Companies:
- May guarantee an improvement in your search engine position, unique visitor numbers, or they may simply offer a series of services known to give a site more weight in a search engine and generate increased traffic to your site. They research popular search phrases for your market and work to get your site associated with those phrases.
- Offer plans to keep improving your site's popularity over time, through constant monitoring of popular keyword phrases, updating your site's content regularly, link exchange, social media campaigns, and many other techniques. The only constant in online marketing is that things are changing all the time. Would anyone have considered advertising on the "Farmville" game in Facebook five years ago?
