Broken Cable Results in Interrupted Services

Customers throughout the state of Hawaii that rely on Oceanic Time Warner Cable (OTWC) services, including the County, were in a state of confusion on Tuesday morning when all services were down. Internet, cable television and digital phones were out from around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010.
An undersea fiber-optic cable line was damaged resulting in the interruption of thousands of customers cable services. The breakage occurred 3,000 feet below the ocean surface between Maui and Lanai. The cause of the cable break is still unknown, and won't be found until a cable-laying ship arrives in Hawaii, in about a month's time, to repair the damage.
To temporarily fix this problem, OTWC has rerouted its services through another undersea cable that runs to Los Angeles. Hawaii Telecom has also loaned OTWC a portion of its inter-island fiber-optic cable network until their fiber-optic cable has been restored. Fortunately, services were up and running for Maui County by the late afternoon.
If you haven't happened to notice, internet speeds are a bit...slow, and we hope, along with you, that it'll be running much smoother as soon as the cable is repaired. Due to our phone lines and the internet being a bit sketchy since the outage, we will be conducting client support in-office until the cable is restored. If you need any help, submit your support ticket online, and we can schedule an appointment with you promptly.
