With the United States midterm elections upon us, for those running for office or involved with elected officials in some way, you may be wondering if now would be a good time to make a last ditch pitch to your constituency via Facebook (and Instagram) to help position you or your party to win the election come November. If you are already running political ads on Facebook, then yes, by all means make that final push and make it count. However, if you or your party have not yet run any political ads on the world’s biggest social network, you may be better off planning your social media strategy for the next election. Why? Read on . . .

As has been widely reported since the events of the 2016 Presidential Election, many have placed blame on various groups for unduly influencing the nation’s most recent major election, with much of this interference being placed squarely in the hands of outside groups whom, for obvious reasons, should not have been able to so easily attempt to disrupt something as important as the voting process. After much research and debate, Facebook decided to take the step of fortifying their network against future attempts to exploit and influence content related to politics and other issues of national importance via numerous network-wide measures. One such safeguard which has recently been implemented is validation of those looking to run paid advertising for political campaigns on Facebook.

While regular paid advertising for businesses on Facebook can basically be had just by giving the social network your credit card info, when looking to run ads, boost posts, or create any other type of paid advertising for a political campaign, Facebook makes you work to throw money at them through the new validation process. Take a look at what you now must do/prove to Facebook in order to let them let you pay them to show people your campaign ads:

Confirm your identity.
Facebook wants to make sure the account tasked with running ads is a real person, who resides in the U.S., and can prove it. This means you need to provide them with much of the same type of identity information you would provide a bank or mortgage company prior to applying for a loan, including:

– A copy of your driver’s license or other government issued ID, both front and back sides, clearly showing your legal name, date of birth, etc.

– The last four digits of your Social Security number.

– Your home address.

– Your phone number. Note: Facebook runs a check to make sure that the phone number you provide is yours, and is registered in your name. If it finds that it is not in your name (which can happen even if the number is currently yours) then you will be required to perform additional steps on your phone or computer to complete this part of the process.

Wait for a letter in the mail.
Although a digital company by nature, Facebook has decided to take the extra step of snail-mailing a letter to the home address you provide during the first identity confirmation steps. As with many retailers online, Facebook does not accept anything less than an actual residence (NO P.O. boxes!). Facebook recommends waiting a good 3-7 days for this letter to arrive; if it doesn’t show up you’ll need to request (and wait) for a new letter to be sent to you. Once received, follow the steps outlined in the letter to complete this portion of the validation.

Two Factor Authentication
If you have not already, Facebook will require you to activate two factor authentication on your account to prove once again that you are the human being authorized by Facebook to run these types of ads for your specific Facebook page.

That’s it, right?
Not quite. In some circumstances, Facebook will require that you submit additional supporting documentation for identity validation. If these documents are required, they will notify you via Facebook, and may lengthen the time it takes to process your validation request from 3-7 day to 2-4 weeks (assuming they accept all your documents at the time you submit them).

Finally, once you have jumped through these hoops and have been successfully verified, Facebook will require two additional steps to be completed before allowing you to run your ads:

1. Link your page to your validated account. This will give you permission to run political ads on your linked page.

2. Add a short disclaimer stating who is paying for the advertising, to be shown on every ad that you run. Example: “This ad paid for by the friends of Mark Zuckerberg 2020”.

Once these two steps have been completed, Facebook will once again churn through the data and, if all looks good to them, will FINALLY give you permission to run ads related to politics and/or issues of national importance.

So there you have it. If you’re lucky, you could begin this process RIGHT NOW and maybe, MAYBE, be verified just in time to run a few days worth of Facebook ads for your campaign. Or, you could keep this information in mind for your next (re)election campaign. Before I go into my experience as an intern at Meyer Computer Inc, let’s start with my back story. For my last semester of my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing, it was a requirement to either participate in an internship or write a paper. Because I wanted more of a hands-on experience in an actual work environment, I had no hesitation choosing an internship. The tricky part to all of this however was, I was a distance learning student from University of Hawaii West Oahu, meaning that all my classes were online and the internships listed for me to take, were all based out of the island of Oahu. My home is on Maui and unfortunately, there was no list of internships for me to apply to.

Therefore, I began to do my own research and started reaching out to potential sites that I felt would be beneficial for me. Meyer Computer was always at the top of my list after hearing last summer about an internship they were having. I read about the company and liked how it fit what I was interested in learning about. After meeting with Jesse and Chris, I was ready to start my first day at Meyer Computer!

Before walking into Meyer Computer on my first day I must admit I was a bit nervous. It was my first time being in this type of work environment learning about web design and internet marketing. I had no experience and was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up. However, those fears were pushed aside as Chris, Kathy, Shelby, Jesse, Sal, and even the adorable office cat Zippy, welcomed me in with open arms and friendly smiles. Although the team and office is small, the amount of productivity that goes on definitely makes up for it.

My experience here has been rewarding, fun, and I have learned so much while being here. My tasks and responsibilities have ranged from writing published blogs for Kahana Village, creating an audit/training manual that current and future clients can use for their website, learning about search engine optimization for real estate websites, working on social media for specific clients, and last but not least participating in weekly marketing meetings where I could see in detail how much work the staff at Meyer Computer puts in to keep their clients successful in marketing and web design.

The time that I have spent here I would not have experienced if I had chosen to write a paper or something that I could have learned through my textbooks for my business courses. When I first imagined working in a computer office, I pictured those movie scenes with workers scrambling to their desks and papers flying everywhere. With all of the websites and tasks that Meyer Computer, Inc. is responsible for, I was sure that this office would be something like those hectic scenes. But what I walked into on the first day was the complete opposite! Everyone was so calm and quiet, even though I knew that each person had a lot on their plate. Everyone got along so well and knew how to enjoy themselves, joking around every now and then. There was a complete sense of aloha and that is one of the most important things to have in a working environment.

I was a junior at Baldwin High School when one of my teachers told me about an internship with Meyer Computer. Getting a job was one of my main summer goals, so I happily applied once I heard about this opportunity. What scared me a little, at first, was discovering that writing was a key part of this job. Writing wasn’t always one of my strongest skills, but I found out that the writing I would be doing here at Meyer Computer was way more fun. Here, colorful words were the perfect way to express how amazing the island of Maui is!

When first starting at Meyer Computer, my main supervisor was Lisa Almeida. Right from the first day, she taught me everything I needed to know about the social media and marketing aspect of this company. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but Lisa guided me through everything and made me feel comfortable. Once getting the hang of things, she would check up on me and proofread all of my pieces. She, and the entire staff, really made me feel welcomed right from the start. Especially the office cat, Zippy, who always came around to cheer everyone up!

Throughout the whole internship I got to share my knowledge about Maui’s many different features through blog writing for sites like rentalsmaui.com and kahanavillage.com. Being that the majority of readers were to be Maui visitors, I was taught to think about the audience. While I was writing, I would have to remember to explain myself, especially when using Hawaiian words like “honu” I would also have to type out “Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.” This was also the perfect way to brag about what a great island we live on! I wrote a total of twenty-three blogs this summer and while it was a lot, it was worth it to see my writing actually published online for people to read.

This internship, which was my very first real job, will be an experience that I will always remember and look back on! I learned a lot, from what was happening on Maui to stories of Hawaiian mythology . I also got a sense of how huge the Internet is and how it works as a whole! Even though this internship may not have been related to my career path, I gained a lot of knowledge on an important part of today’s community — social media. Overall, I am glad that this opportunity served as my first job. From today on, I will always be able to share with others the blogs that I wrote and published online, all thanks to Meyer Computer!
